FangWne's Personal Reflection

This module (SMM) has given me an opportunity to do the real interaction with the company. It is not easy to come out with the idea to increase the popularity of the company. We need to go through a lot of thinking process to make sure the ideas are applicable. It has also  indeed helped us in the future life. No matter which jobs we will be doing in the future, we all need to come out with very creative ideas to improve ourselves and the work we will be doing. Critical thinking and implementations are very important to help us to learn from the mistake and  then we will be successful.

My main contribution to the team is to think of different ideas and put it into the slides. I have also done my part to present on certain slides for the presentation. My group members are also very helpful, they all put on their best effort to work on this project. That is my pleasure to work with my group members. Although it is very tough, I really enjoy doing this project with my group members.

Wesley's Contribution to the SMM Group

Altogether, SMM lasted for 2 semesters in a total of approximately 16 weeks. While it appeared short, it appeared to be packed with many different learning experience, some of which we're unable to learn from an Academic Education such as Maths or Sciences.  We were rushed, pushed to our limits to meet datelines as our lessons were usually on the last days of the week, which gave us lesser time to prepare for them.

As a team member, I contributed mostly in holding meetings, assigning work, coallation of research and creating of slides. As I was the one who contacted Taste of Hong Kong Cafe, I am able to provide information and resources to the team or otherwise directed to the manager of THK itself. Many times I attempt to design slides layout, to suit the atmosphere of our presentation as well as input many different animations. As a student that isn't inclined in Arts and Design, I was tempted all the time to be laid back about it and leave the plain simple slides as they are. However, it was probably my constant seeking of excellence that prompted me to continue working on it until it was presentable and before I knew it, it became not a chore to pursue the best to what I can do, but a habit. I would even be frank to say that it was SMM that honed the spirit of excellence in me, for me to push and overcome my self-defined limits. As a student, this was what I felt and learnt.

As a person, through different practical assignments such as coming up with strategies to suit the habits and trend of people daily lives, it allows me to comprehend the differing mindsets held behind different types of customers. All in all, it was a module that gave me deeper understanding of many aspects and it was definitely an enriching experience.

Personal Reflection- Edwin Liauw

It was an enjoyable and memorable experience doing this project as this is the very first assignment in my life that actually carries a level of reality into it for we had to scout for a real operating company and seek their approval of working with them. It’s really unlike the other “make-believe” projects and assignments I did for the past 10 years of my education life. The fact that the assignment was so real really spurred me to give my all. The assignment was crafted in such a way that it’s so realistic that it depicts the real working world yet scaled down to a comfortable level whereby it’s still manageable for students of our age. It is a really a great pleasure to be able to work in my SMM team because I not only learn a great deal from each and everyone but also be able to feel comfort, care and support for one another, something that did not exist in the past 10 years of my education life. For this project, I was the “creative guy” of the team constantly offering an alternate perspective to get things done or propose an idea that’s different from the general masses such as an alternative way of presentation or a more pragmatic way to get things done systematically. During the initial stage of the project whereby we had to scout for a company to work with, I tried scouting for one but was turned down which was a common fate faced by my teammates and the worst part was that the deadline was pressing down on us. I then approached the other teams in my class to check if they had more than one company that agreed to work with them and if they are able to pass the job over to us if there was one. This was done as a last minute contingency plan as we had to prepare for the worst and I told my team that in the event whereby no company, that our team approached, wishes to work with us, we have a backup plan. This was done in order to prevent our team’s morale and spirit from crumbling. Luckily the company approached by Wesley agreed to work with us thus averting the crisis faced. For the 1st presentation, I was in charge of presenting our team’s proposed strategy which was named as “Buy 3 get 1” free. As for the preparation for the 2nd presentation on the comparison between a local and overseas café, I was in-charge of finding an overseas café similar to that of our café. I managed to find a couple of overseas café and our team decided to use one of the overseas café that I found which was “Delta Café” a Portuguese café. I helped out in the creation of the slides and presentation of the delta café. For the 2nd presentation, I was in-charge of presenting the points of the level of engagement, strengths and weaknesses, areas of improvement and response level of delta café. This Project taught me that in order to succeed we must work as a closely-knitted team. We are so inter-connected, so -interdependent that if any of us collapse, the whole team will collapse. It's really a "All for one, One for all! Progress as a team or there will be no progress at all."

Davin's Reflection

Davin's reflection

Having to work together as a team has taught me various things in this project. I helped out in the sourcing out of information and collation of it for my teammates to let my teammates use them as part of their presentation. I also took part in helping out Wesley with some of the creation of the slides to develop and refine our slides further. Furthermore , I went with Wesley to meet our client and also had a good talk with her.

I believe that everyone has contributed a part in each given part and done well in them , so good work everyone! I believe we have done a good job and hopefully get better in the future!

Reflection on SMM assignment (Sheng Yang)

This is a summary of what I did to contribute to the project.
I helped out with the SWOT analysis (weakness) portion and came up with one strategy to improve our client’s restaurant.
Basically, each member of the group thought up of an idea each, made slides on their own strategy and then sent it to Wesley to collate it as the final presentation powerpoint slides.
I also went with Davin and Wesley once to Taste of Hong Kong Café to check out the atmosphere and see if there is anything to improve on.

As for my part, I did not encounter much problems, other than coming up with a creative strategy to improve our client's restaurant. I had to take a look at the rival companies' website to see what was missing.

Response from: Taste of Hongkong Cafe

At last, on 5th May 2012, 7.21pm, Miss Karen texted me her comfirmation to our collaboration. As she was unable to make it on the other days, she gave me the response today, which resulted in a little delay of completing our assignment. As such, I sent her an email to thank her for her enthusiastic and positive response.
